According to local lore, city co-founders John Williams and Peter Demens devised a simple way of assigning names to the town and its first hotel in 1888. Demens, a Russian aristocrat, won a coin toss and christened the burg after his hometown of St. Petersburg. Williams, a railroad exec, did the same with the Detroit Hotel. Many a celeb and politician have occupied rooms at the hotel during its heyday. Now a residential condominium, it’s on the…

Coming into the Month of May, it seems as though that we have a bit of division about whether or not this year's Indy 500 will be as "classic" as it has been in years past. To that end, there's been a bit of infighting amongst the fans about whether the glass is half full or filled with liquid despair and decroded feces. With this in mind, I believe that the best way to inaugurate the festivities at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this year is a paraphrase of that great American philosopher (and, tragically, Chicago Blackhawks fan) Clark W. One of the best owners for my fan money in the Indy Car Series for many years is John Barnes. Some folks have problems with him and business partners have come and gone. But he and his team are remarkably consistent and have been there for the series for many years. They are one of my top three favorite teams every year. One of the biggest jokes perpetrated all year by IndyCar management is the levying of a $25,000 fine and probation for a TWEET. Are they kidding me? Being the classy professional he is, Barnes issued a statement in which he basically kissed the arses of the management. Here…
  • Random Thoughts About Uncomfortable IndyCar Items

    Disciple of INDYCAR
    23 Apr 2012 | 9:41 am
As the IndyCar Series heads really far south, like South America south, for the next non-oval before 9 days in May, several items have my admittedly limited intellect churning with all types of thoughts. There is no scientific rationale nor links, but some of the items running between my ears include: -Beaux Barfield is an enigma. Fans appreciate the way he has shaken up Race Control (it needed it) but wonder how/where his bread is buttered. The ‘avoidable contact’ rule, for example. No one seems immune unless they drive for Penske or Ganassi. In those cases most of their drivers are…

Do you think that all of this talk of lawsuits and potential countersuits between Lotus and Dragon Racing is somewhat despicable when we should be focused on what’s going on out on the track? Do you think the same about the hearings and appeals between Chevy and Honda regarding Honda’s new turbocharger? Well, you would [...]

With some engine manufacturers doing their best to limit the number of teams that they are involved with, teams successfully defecting from a certain manufacturer while the same manufacturer plays “chicken” with another team to see which one blinks first – it seems the best we can hope for is to have thirty-three cars in [...]

  • The State of IndyCar Engine Supply in 2012

    1 May 2012 | 10:49 pm
Subtitle: The Post Wherein The Speedgeek Finally Loses His Everlovin' MindThere's been a whole lot of stuff that's been sticking in my craw of late when it comes to the World of IndyCar, specifically, in the realm of engine supply. I won't clog up the pixels here with all of the technical details, because most of you probably already know them, but IndyCar has gone to smaller capacity, turbocharged engines for 2012 (much like what I've advocated in the past, albeit with some subtle differences...all this said, I am perfectly OK with the path the ICONIC committee chose). The ENTIRE automotive…

    20 Feb 2012 | 9:36 pm
The latest and possibly biggest yet hubbub of the 2011-2012 IZOD IndyCar Series offseason has been the ongoing struggle by Sarah Fisher and her crew at the newly re-launched Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing to get an engine to put in the back of their brand new DW12 Dallara IndyCar. As many other folks have documented (better than I could, I think, so I'll stop short on most of the particulars), SFHR seemingly has everything in place for this year: 2011 Indy Lights champion, all around hotshoe and sure-thing future superduperstar Josef Newgarden doing the driving, a new shop being built a mere…
